Sedation Dentistry in Arlington
Do you experience feelings of anxiety, fear, or outright panic when faced with an upcoming dental appointment? It may comfort you to know you’re not alone – in fact, studies show that a majority of adults have some level of dental phobia. This can lead to skipped dental appointments, which negatively affects your oral health. At I-20 Family Dental, we provide sedation dentistry as an effective way to take the edge off these emotions helping our patients feel genuinely relaxed as we improve their oral health and beauty. Dr. Stephen Wardlaw offers two options – oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Like the name implies, oral conscious sedation will involve you taking an oral medication at a certain time before your appointment. You’ll feel deeply comfortable while still remaining aware enough to respond to our team’s questions and commands, but you might not even remember your appointment once it’s over. Patients undergoing oral conscious sedation need an escort to bring them both to and from our Arlington location. By the following morning, the effects of the sedation should be gone.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is often the right choice for patients with mild to moderate feelings of dental-related anxiety. The gas is administered through a mask that fits over the nose, and within a few minutes, patients should start to feel happier and more relaxed. Our team can adjust the dosage if needed to achieve the right effect. Best of all, once the mask is removed, the effects wear off very quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home or return to your daily routine.
Who needs sedation dentistry?
We often recommend sedation dentistry in the following situations:
- If you feel scared or anxious when thinking about the sights and sounds of the dental office.
- If local anesthetics don’t have a strong enough effect on you.
- If you have an overly sensitive gag reflex.
- If you suffer from a health condition that makes it difficult to sit still for long periods of time.
