Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?
At I-20 Family Dental, we strongly recommend that patients of all ages visit our practice once every six months for an in-depth checkup and cleaning. Even patients who practice great oral hygiene at home fall victim to potentially serious problems like periodontal disease, oral cancer, and more. By carefully inspecting your teeth, soft tissue, any existing restorations, and other important areas of your mouth, Dr. Stephen Wardlaw can determine what your needs are and address them at the earliest stages possible saving you from more severe oral damage and discomfort down the road.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup
Your dental checkup will be with Dr. Wardlaw. After welcoming you to our practice (or catching up with you, if you’re a long-time patient), he will ask you a few questions about your smile, like if you’ve been experiencing any abnormal dental symptoms. Then, he will take a look at your most recent X-rays, conduct an oral cancer screening, and examine your teeth, gums, tongue, and existing restorations. When he’s done, he will share his findings and let you know any recommendations he has for maintaining or restoring your healthy smile.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
In addition to an exam, children and adults alike should also undergo an in-depth cleaning twice a year. Redonda and Dana are our talented hygienists, and they’ll take the time to carefully inspect your soft tissue for any tell-tale signs of periodontal disease. Our goal is to prevent this dangerous condition before it starts. If you’re already experiencing problems, we provide periodontal therapy as well to combat ill effects and restore your smile to a healthier, happier state. A deep cleaning to combat this issue usually will involve:
- The removal of plaque and tartar from below your gum line (Scaling)
- The smoothing of your tooth roots to prevent future plaque accumulation (Root Planing)
- Antibiotic therapy that’s designed to minimize infection
Our practice is conveniently located to serve patients from all over the Arlington, TX area, as well as Grand Prairie, Kennedale, Mansfield, Fort Worth, and beyond. Contact I-20 Family Dental today if you have any questions so we can help you, or if you’re ready to schedule your first appointment.
