What to Expect During Wisdom Tooth Recovery

Millions of Americans get their wisdom teeth pulled every year. They’re the third set of molars that grow at the very back of the mouth, typically erupting between ages 17 and 25. However, some people may never get them at all! Since there’s not enough room in the mouth for wisdom teeth, most cases require extraction. Although the recovery time can vary from person to person, here’s a basic idea of what you can expect during wisdom tooth recovery.
How Long Is the Wisdom Tooth Recovery Process?
The wisdom teeth removal process depends on the tooth and difficulty of the surgery. Some people might need stitches to close the wound, while others may not. In some cases, surgery can even cause bruising, swelling, and pain. All these factors play a role in the length of time it’ll take to heal from wisdom teeth removal. Even though the recovery time will be different for everyone, most people can expect it to take a couple of weeks.
Here’s a general idea of what the wisdom tooth recovery process looks like:
- First 24 Hours – Blood clots will form.
- 2 to 3 Days – Mouth and facial swelling should begin to improve.
- 7 Days – Unless your stitches are dissolvable, your dentist will remove any remaining ones.
- 7 to 10 Days – Jaw stiffness and soreness will begin to fade.
- 2 Weeks – Any mild bruising on the face should heal.
Aftercare Instructions
Following your surgery, you must take excellent of your mouth to prevent infections and complications. Your dentist will provide you with aftercare instructions to clean and protect your mouth – make sure you diligently follow their advice. Here’s what you’re usually advised to do at home:
- Rinse with warm salt water to keep the wound clean, but don’t spit it out! Put your mouth over the sink and simply let the water fall out.
- Do not brush, floss, and rinse for an entire day after your wisdom teeth removal.
- Gently dab the wound with gauze to absorb any excess blood.
- Take it easy for the first day or two after surgery. Avoid doing anything that would dislodge your stitches or blood clot.
Tips for a Speedy Recovery
For a speedy and problem-free wisdom tooth recovery, here are some tips you should follow:
- Apply a cold compress. Icing your jaw and cheek will help minimize pain, bruising, and swelling.
- Take prescribed medication as directed. Make sure you take your prescribed painkillers as instructed and complete your dosage of antibiotics.
- Watch your diet. Stick to a diet of pureed and soft foods for the first few days following surgery. Try eating nutrient-packed meals to lower your risk of complications.
- Rest as much as possible. Giving your body plenty of time to rest will help it heal faster!
